This program is developed by René Fonville, a general practitioner and dry needling therapist. It encompasses a comprehensive database featuring over 100 muscles, complete with detailed descriptions of trigger points and referral patterns. Each muscle entry provides an in-depth overview of its function, anatomy, and innervation, supported by both textual and graphical representations.
Dry needling is defined as the therapeutic application of a solid needle to alleviate myofascial pain, distinguishing itself from techniques that utilize hollow needles for substance injection. Research indicates that the use of solid needles can be equally effective in relieving pain associated with muscles and connective tissue as compared to injections. Although dry needling and acupuncture share similarities, their underlying principles and therapeutic intentions vary significantly.
Dr. Janet Travell was a prominent figure in the study of myofascial pain, characterized by pain and dysfunction in skeletal muscles. She pioneered numerous strategies for addressing chronic pain conditions. Alongside David Simons, Dr. Travell co-authored the influential two-volume work, Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual. The first volume, published in 1983, focused on the upper body, while the second volume followed in 1992, addressing the lower body. Dr. Travell served as Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at The George Washington University and remained active in her field until her passing at the age of ninety-five, continuing to write, lecture, and participate in conferences.
The application is user-friendly, offering a practical resource for professionals engaged in addressing "myofascial pain" in their everyday practice.
